Chandigarh: The custody of Amritpal Singh, a hardline Sikh preacher and newly elected MP ( Lok Sabha ) rom Khadoor Sahib seat, lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, has been extended for one year. The Punjab government’s Home Affairs and Justice Department had ordered the extension on June 3, a day before the results of the Lok Sabha elections were announced.
Amritpal is the head of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation
The details of the order were told to the media on Wednesday. Amritpal, the head of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation, is currently lodged in an Assam jail along with his nine associates under the National Security Act. Contesting as an independent candidate, Amritpal won the Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib constituency.
Amritpal defeated nearest rival and Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira by 1,97,120 votes. The order said, “Based on the facts and circumstances, the Advisory Board is of the opinion that there are sufficient reasons for continued detention of the detenu Amritpal Singh Sandhu alias Amritpal Singh under the provisions of the National Security Act, 1980.
