Fuel Price Update 2026: Govt Rules Out Financial Support to Oil Companies Despite Rising Global Prices

Business: Amid rising global energy prices triggered by the West Asia crisis, the Government of India has clarified that there is currently no plan to provide financial support to state-run oil companies facing losses on fuel sales.

A senior official from the Petroleum Ministry stated that there is no proposal under consideration to compensate public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs), including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. These companies are reportedly bearing significant losses due to the continued freeze on petrol and diesel prices in the domestic market.

Despite a sharp increase in international crude oil prices, retail fuel rates in India have remained largely unchanged for over four years. Officials indicated that this decision has helped keep inflation under control, even as global fuel markets remain volatile.

OMCs Facing Heavy Losses
With global oil prices surging, OMCs are experiencing under-recoveries on petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). While partial price adjustments have been made for international aviation fuel, domestic fuel prices have not seen a corresponding increase.

Industry sources suggest that the financial burden on oil companies has increased significantly, especially as they continue to sell fuels below market-linked prices. However, the government has chosen not to intervene financially at this stage.

LPG Losses and Possible Support
In the case of domestic LPG, oil companies are also facing losses. Unlike petrol and diesel, the government has historically provided subsidies for household LPG, and similar support may be considered if the situation worsens.

Fuel Price Hike Likely Ahead
With assembly elections now concluded, experts believe that a revision in fuel prices may be imminent. While officials had earlier maintained that there was no plan to increase prices, sources indicate that a hike could happen in the coming weeks due to sustained pressure from global markets.

India remains heavily dependent on crude oil imports, making domestic fuel prices sensitive to international fluctuations. The ongoing disruptions in key global supply routes have further added to price instability.

Current Fuel Prices in Delhi:

  • Petrol: ₹94.77 per litre
  • Diesel: ₹87.67 per litre
  • Domestic LPG: ₹913 per cylinder

Fuel prices vary across states depending on local taxes and levies.

Market Outlook
Energy experts say the current situation reflects a delicate balance between controlling inflation and managing the financial health of oil companies. If global crude prices remain high, consumers may soon see an increase in petrol, diesel, and LPG prices.
