Murshidabad: Border Security Force (BSF) took charge on Friday on the request of District Magistrate in violence affected Murshidabad district of West Bengal. (Bengal) Officials of Bengal Frontier of BSF have taken effective steps to control road jams, blockades and other activities. According to sources, about 300 BSF jawans have been deployed in Dak Bungalow Road and Farakka area near Saijumur and Dhuliyan under Shamsherganj Police Station. Local police is also cooperating with BSF to control the situation. At the same time, Governor CV Anand Bose has spoken to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the situation in the state.
BSF fielded its soldiers
According to sources, the BSF has said that it has fielded its soldiers on the request of the local administration. He said that a total of 2 companies are currently handling the situation in Murshidabad and all necessary steps are being taken to keep the situation under complete control. Let us tell you that this area falls within 50 km of the international border, where the jurisdiction of the BSF applies. In October 2021, the jurisdiction of the BSF was increased from 15 km to 50 km from the border by amending the BSF Act 1968. At present, the work of maintaining peace and order in the area is going on with the joint efforts of BSF and police.
Police fired tear gas shells in Murshidabad
People protesting against the Waqf Act after Friday prayers in many areas of Murshidabad pelted stones at the police. In response to the ruckus created by the protesters, the police kept firing tear gas shells in self-defense. Hundreds of people came out on the road after Friday prayers in Shamsherganj and Suti areas of Murshidabad today. The protesters raised slogans against the Waqf Act and blocked the National Highway. When the police tried to remove the protesters from the road, the protesters attacked the police. This ruckus continued for a long time and when the force was called from the surrounding areas, the situation came under control.
There was a lot of uproar in Murshidabad
In Murshidabad too, during the protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, the police was allegedly pelted with stones and its vehicles were set on fire. This incident took place in Jangipur area of the district, where a large number of people from the Muslim community had gathered in the afternoon demanding the withdrawal of this law. Till Wednesday, the police had arrested a total of 22 people in connection with the violence. The police had said on Wednesday that the situation in the district is peaceful at the moment. However, seeing the growing opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill, the BSF has now taken charge in many areas of the district.
