CRPF jawan killed(CRPF) 

Imphal: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) (CRPF)  jawan was killed in an attack by suspected militants in Mongbung village of Jiribam district of Manipur on Sunday morning, police said. A policeman was also injured in the attack and was admitted to a hospital, police said. The deceased jawan has been identified as Ajay Kumar Jha (43) from Bihar. “The jawan was shot in the head and was declared dead when taken to the hospital. The injured policeman is undergoing treatment but is out of danger,” a police official said.

Governor expresses grief
“Governor Anusuiya Uikey is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a brave CRPF jawan in an ambush by suspected militants at Jiribam. She offers her heartfelt condolences to the jawan’s family,” the Raj Bhavan said in a post. “Governor Uikey respects the jawan’s courage and devotion to duty and has prayed for the peace of the departed soul. She also strongly condemned this heinous act of violence and said that such acts will not be tolerated in Manipur,” the post said. The state is committed to ensuring justice and maintaining peace and security, the post said.

Attack suspected to be by Kuki militants
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also condemned the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. “I strongly condemn the attack by an armed group in Jiribam district today and the loss of life of a CRPF jawan in the line of duty. The armed group is suspected to be a Kuki militant group,” he posted on Twitter. “The supreme sacrifice of the jawan in the line of duty will not go in vain,” he said. I express my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of the martyred soldier, and pray for the speedy recovery of the person injured during the attack.”

Additional security forces deployed
The officer said that gunshots were heard in the village on Saturday night as well. Another officer said that additional security forces have been deployed in Mongbung after Sunday’s attack. He said that a vehicle of the security personnel was damaged in the firing. He said that the attack took place at around 9.40 am. Meanwhile, the apex body of Kukis in the state, Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), condemned the violence and termed it a “state-sponsored attack”. Ethnic violence has been going on between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur since May last year, in which more than 200 people have lost their lives.
