New Delhi: The situation is worsening due to continuous heavy rains in the northern region of Tamil Nadu. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain in many districts. After heavy rains, the government has decided to keep schools closed for two days in three districts including Chennai. Chennai and its adjoining Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu have received heavy rains. Due to the overnight rains in Chennai, life has been completely disrupted. CM MK Stalin has given instructions to speed up the relief work.
The rain in Chennai can be gauged from the fact that the rain on Saturday broke the record of 15 years. Due to incessant rains, water entered the houses in low-lying areas of the city. The administration in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts has issued orders for complete closure of schools and colleges after the meteorological department warned of heavy rain.
CM Stalin has appealed to the people who have gone out of Chennai to celebrate the Diwali festival, to postpone their journey to Chennai for a few days due to heavy rains. The Meteorological Department has predicted wind speed reaching 60 kmph gusting to 40-50 kmph over south Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast. Due to strong wind, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain on Monday.
CM Stalin on Sunday declared two days off on Monday and Tuesday in schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts.
Chennai recorded the highest rainfall of 134.29 mm. The Greater Chennai Corporation has set up 160 relief camps in the city and senior officials have been deployed to oversee the rain relief operations.
Four teams of NDRF have been sent to Madurai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur for relief and rescue operations, while SDRF teams have been sent to Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts.
With heavy rains, the possibility of flooding has also been issued in many districts. State water resources officials issued flood warnings in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur and district collectors have been asked to move people living in low-lying areas to safer places.
CM Stalin said that the state received 334.64 mm of rain between October 1 and November 7, which is 44 per cent more than the normal rainfall received during the season. He said districts like Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Villupuram, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, Perambalur have received more than 60 per cent rainfall and 5,106 relief camps have been set up in the districts.
