Shimla. The danger of a major earthquake is looming over the Himalayas, due to which there is a possibility of devastation in Himachal as well. According to scientists, looking at the movement of the Indian tectonic plate, there is a possibility of an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 in the Himalayan region. IIT Kharagpur has started research if this ever happens and the loss is minimal.
2 Senior Research Fellows and 2 Junior Research Fellows of Geology and Geophysics Department of IIT Kharagpur have reached Shimla. The team of these researchers will conduct survey at 20 places in the capital. Seismic Hazard, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment will be done.
Team member Senior Research Fellow Amarender Pratap Bind told that geophysical field investigation of Shimla will be done. Some part of Shimla comes in Seismic Zone 4 and some part in Zone 5. Shimla’s land and rocks will also be surveyed. Also, the way roads, railway lines, bridges and other constructions including building construction have been done here, they will be studied. This team will prepare a report, in which it will be told how the loss can be reduced. Explain that IIT is studying many big cities of the country. This team includes Senior Research Fellow Jyothula Madan, Junior Research Fellow Shubhamay Maji and Pritam Singh.
mayhem in shimla
Shimla city is very sensitive in terms of earthquake, most of the buildings are not earthquake resistant, if a major earthquake occurs, there can be huge loss of life and property. There are many places in the state where buildings have been constructed in an unscientific manner, rules have been ignored even in many developmental works and projects. If disaster strikes, Shimla’s suburbs like Sanjauli have become overcrowded. There will be more damage here.
