Delhi. The Delhi High Court has given an important decision regarding the negligence being done in the treatment being done in government hospitals. While hearing a petition filed by a Bihar resident, the High Court said that hospitals cannot deny treatment to patients coming from outside Delhi. In fact, the petitioner had alleged that the government-run Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital in the capital has provided free MRI test facility only to the residents of Delhi. The court said, “They (hospitals) cannot insist on voter ID cards here… In AIIMS or any other hospital in Delhi, you cannot stop citizens from outside to come (and get treated).
The Court noted that an earlier judgment of this Court makes it clear that so far as treatment is concerned, treatment should be provided to all citizens irrespective of their place of residence. The court directed that the MRI of the petitioner be done on December 26 at 11 am. Advocate Ashok Aggarwal, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the hospital adopted a ‘discriminatory approach’ against people who were not residents of Delhi and hence the petitioner was given a date in July 2024 for MRI scan of his knee.
The plea claimed, “It was explained by the doctor that the facility of MRI test is available only to those Delhiites who have Voter ID Card of Delhi and others have to undergo the test at their own cost.”
