New Delhi. The Kejriwal government has set a target to clean the Yamuna river before the next Delhi Assembly elections. Delhi’s Water Minister Satyendar Jain has said that every type of dirty water falling into the Yamuna will be treated. It has been started at STP located in Narela. Jain said the neighboring states are the source of about 155 MGD (million gallons per day) of filth. 15 MGD falling into Yamuna comes from Haryana through Drain No. 6, 90 MGD through Badshahpur Drain and 50 MGD from Uttar Pradesh.
Delhi’s Water Minister and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) President Satyendar Jain visited the sewage treatment plant at Narela and inspected it. On this occasion, he said that the manner in which waste water and industrial waste is continuously being dumped in Yamuna by neighboring states, it is very worrying. In such a situation, the Kejriwal government has decided to clean the dirty water coming from other states as well.

Let us inform that a few months ago, the Delhi government under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had prepared a 6-step action plan to clean the Yamuna. It also includes a plan to prevent sewage and drain water coming from neighboring states from falling into the Yamuna. Under this, Delhi Jal Board has started the work of cleaning 15 MGD sewage coming from Haryana through drain number 6 by stopping it at Narela STP. In view of this, instructions have been given to increase the capacity of Narela STP from 10 MGD to 20 MGD, so that now 15 MGD sewage of Haryana coming here through Drain No. 6 can also be treated.
Delhi government will revive a lake in Tikri Khurd with recycled water, which will help recharge groundwater. Revitalizing the Tikri Khurd lake will not only save the environment from contamination, but will also help in improving the depleting groundwater level in Delhi and will also improve the natural ecosystem.
Along with this, the DJB classifies ponds of about 1 to 1.5 acres as ‘water bodies’ and large ponds as ‘lakes’. The lakes are being connected to existing treatment plants to ensure the source of water. The Delhi government, under its ‘City of Lakes’ project, will rejuvenate the lake at Tikri Khurd by using recycled water from Narela STP. This ‘City of Lakes’ project was launched in 2018 to supply water by recharging groundwater and recycling recycled water to meet the daily water demand of the city. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal aims to clean Yamuna by 2025.
