Water Availability: There is water scarcity in Delhi. However, meanwhile, for the first time in the last 20 years, the production of water in Delhi has increased from 930 MGD to 990 MGD. In Delhi, 60 MGD of additional water production from internal sources has been increased but this is not enough to meet the requirement of the capital. The Delhi government says that 400 MGD of water is still needed to meet the requirement.
According to government estimates, Delhi requires 1300 to 1400 MGD of water. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal (says that in the 90s the Supreme Court allocated water to Delhi from neighboring states. After that it was never increased, then the population of Delhi was less than one crore and today about 2.5 crores It’s over.
CM Arvind Kejriwal said that there is acute shortage of water in Delhi. Delhi is the capital of the country. There should be water facility here. The total water production of Delhi used to be around 930 MGD. I think it remains 930 MGD for last 15-20 years. The availability of water in Delhi will have to be increased.
According to the CM, the population in Delhi is increasing. In the 90s, the population of Delhi was less than one crore, today the population of Delhi is more than 2.5 crore. Compared to the 90s, today the population of Delhi has increased to about two and a half times. Delhi does not have its own water. Delhi gets water from adjoining states. The allocation of water to Delhi from the surrounding states was decided by the Supreme Court in the 90s. Since then the allocation of water has remained the same and has never been increased, whereas the population of Delhi has now increased to two and a half times.
“Talking to neighboring states through the central government”
According to the CM, the water in Delhi will be cleaned using scientific and natural methods and dirty water will not be allowed to enter the Yamuna. The results of these efforts are also starting to show. CM Arvind Kejriwal said that we are making two parallel efforts to increase the availability of water. On one hand, we are talking to the neighboring states through the central government to give us more water. Along with this, we are also trying at our level that how with the best management of water, we can increase water through internal sources of Delhi. Both these efforts are going on simultaneously. Till now, Delhi used to produce 930 MGD which has now increased to 990 MGD. Due to these efforts, we have increased about 60 MGD of water from internal sources. Such efforts are being further accelerated.
“Waste Water Will Recharge”
CM Arvind Kejriwal said that we are carrying 70 MGD of water from Coronation Plant. Will pour that water from Palla into Yamuna and then will treat that water at Wazirabad plant and use it. We will recharge the ground water from the existing waste water we have and use it. At the same time, we will also request the neighboring states that they should allocate as much water as they can. He said that our assessment is that Delhi should have 1300 to 1400 MGD of water. In that we will ask for some help from neighboring states and we will get some water from internal sources as well.
