Tokyo Olympics: It is a matter of great pride to hold the national flag in the Olympic Games, ( Olympic Games,) the world’s biggest sporting event. Many legendary athletes from India have had the honor of walking with the national flag in every Olympics. Something similar is going to happen this time too. For the upcoming Paris Olympics, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and top table tennis star Sharat Kamal will hold the tricolor in the opening ceremony. So far 18 athletes have raised the Indian flag in the Olympic Games.
This athlete held the tricolor for the first time for India
The first flag bearer in the Olympic Games was runner Purma Banerjee, who carried the flag at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. After India gained independence in 1947, Dr. Talimeren Ao, the first captain of the men’s football team, hoisted the tricolour at the 1948 London Games. There have also been other prominent sportsmen to hold the flag at the opening ceremony. Former hockey gold medalists Lal Shah Bhokri (1932), Dhyan Chand (1936) and Balbir Singh Senior (1952 and 1956) have also held the flag. Balbir Singh is the only Indian to have held the flag twice at the opening ceremony of the Games.
So far these female athletes have held the Indian flag
India’s first individual gold medalist Abhinav Bindra was the flag bearer at the 2016 Rio Games. At the last Games in Tokyo in 2021, Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh held the flag together for India, making it the first time two Indians held the flag together at the Olympics. India’s first female flag bearer was sprinter Shiny Abraham Wilson, while Anju Bobby George was the second. Mary Kom was the third, while Sindhu will be the fourth woman to hold the flag.
