Kabul. The Taliban government of Afghanistan will soon use the American military base for the purpose of doing business. Acting deputy prime minister for economic affairs said the Taliban would convert former foreign military bases into special economic zones for businesses, according to a report by news agency Reuters. Earlier, the ministry informed that it was working on the plan and had submitted it to the Cabinet and the Economic Committee headed by Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar for approval.
The news agency quoted Mullah Baradar as saying that after detailed discussions, it was decided that the Ministry of Industry and Commerce should take control of the remaining military bases of foreign forces with the intention of converting them into special economic zones. The pilot plan will begin converting bases in the capital Kabul and northern Balkh province. Significantly, since the withdrawal of the American army, many restrictions have been imposed on the Taliban regime, which has broken the back of the country’s economy.
However, the Taliban have said that they are focusing on increasing economic self-reliance through trade and investment. Earlier, the World Bank had said that Afghanistan’s exports have increased and the Taliban administration has managed to keep most of the revenue stable in 2022. The Taliban regime now wants to increase its economic activities by using the state-of-the-art infrastructure left behind by foreign forces.
