Suraiya and Dev Anand: The pairing of Suraiya and Dev Anand was quite (could) a hit in the early period of Hindi cinema i.e. 1940-50. Together they worked in many romantic films and ruled Bollywood for years. While working together, both also fell in love. But both could not execute their love. The biggest obstacle in their love was Suraiya’s grandmother.
Dev Anand’s love life was not hidden from anyone. In his autobiography ‘Romancing with Life’, he revealed how his maternal grandmother became an obstacle between Suraiya and his love. Dev Anand told in his book that he had bought an expensive diamond ring for Suraiya by borrowing money from friends and gifted it to Suraiya. But Suraiya’s grandmother did not like it at all.

It is revealed in a chapter of Dev Anand’s biography ‘Romancing with Life’ that when he was in love with Suraiya, she had given him an expensive gift. The superstar had borrowed some money from his friends and bought a diamond ring for her.
Dev Anand had bought it for Rs 3,000 in the 50s. Suraiya liked the ring very much. She was very happy about the ring she got from Dev Anand. For Suraiya, this ring used to express the loyalty and seriousness of love towards each other.
However, Suraiya told in a throwback interview that Dev Anand had gifted her a diamond ring during the shooting of one of his films. Only then someone from the set told his grandmother about the ring. Due to this, his grandmother got angry with him.
When Suraiya returned home from the shoot, her grandmother forcefully removed the ring from her finger and warned her granddaughter to keep distance from Dev Anand. This incident broke Suraiya’s heart as she knew that Dev Anand had borrowed money from his friends to give her such an expensive ring.
Suraiya admitted that she cried a lot when her grandmother refused to give her back the ring. Not only her maternal grandmother, but Suraiya’s other family members were also against her relationship with Dev Anand as she was a Muslim and Dev Anand was a Hindu.
