Supreme Court will give its verdict today(today)

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will give its verdict today (today) on the petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was sentenced to death in the murder of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. The bench of Justice BR Gavai, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sanjay Karol will pronounce the verdict. Rajoana has requested the Supreme Court to convert his death sentence into life imprisonment. He has said in his application that his mercy petition is pending since 2012. The Central Government has not been able to take a decision on his petition for a long time. He is in jail for 27 years. This is also a violation of his fundamental rights.

Balwant Singh Rajoana has told the Supreme Court in his petition that if his mercy petition is not decided, then as an alternative he can be released on parole till then. Let us tell you that Rajoana was convicted by the court in 1995 for the murder of former Punjab CM Beant Singh. Taking cognizance of the petition, the Supreme Court had said in the past that if no decision is taken by 30 April 2023, then the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Director of CBI (Prosecution) will personally appear before the court along with the record on the next date of hearing. Will appear in front.

The Supreme Court bench had said that despite the earlier order of the court, nothing has been done in this matter so far and there is no clear instruction to the counsel appearing for the Centre. Referring to the previous orders passed by the court regarding the request for time from the Centre, the bench had said that in these circumstances, the Supreme Court has ordered that the application from the central government and other authorities, including the CBI, will be considered immediately. The request or motion or objection to commute the death sentence from the CBI shall be filed within 2 weeks.

The Supreme Court bench had postponed the next hearing of the case till May 3. In 1995, Balwant Singh Rajoana and other co-accused were tried under sections of the IPC and sections of the Explosive Substances Act in connection with the assassination of the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh. After the charges under these offenses were proved, the trial court sentenced Balwant Singh Rajoana and co-accused Jagtar Singh Hawara to death. Rajoana was convicted by the court for his involvement in the bomb blast outside the Punjab Secretariat.
