Himachal Pradesh: The Congress has won a landslide victory in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. The party has won 40 seats by securing 43.90 percent votes. Now discussions have intensified regarding who will become the next Chief Minister. Three names are being mentioned in the race, including the names of Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, Mukesh Agnihotri and Pratibha Singh. Although Pratibha Singh is an MP and she did not contest the election. While Sukhu and Agnihotri have won their seats. Two other leaders Asha Kumari and Kaul Singh Thakur are almost out of the race. Kumari has been a 6-time MLA from Dalhousie. She has lost her seat. While 8-time MLA Thakur has also lost from Drang area of Mandi.

The Congress has called a meeting of all its newly elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh in Shimla on Friday. In this meeting, a resolution can be passed authorizing the Congress President to choose the leader of the Legislature Party (CLP). Earlier, the party had called all its MLAs to Chandigarh, but changed its program after the party got a clear majority in the assembly elections. Congress in-charge for Himachal Pradesh, Rajeev Shukla said that the Congress is happy that it is getting a chance to form the government in the state. He said the Congress would do everything to fulfill the ’10 guarantees’ and provide better governance to the people.
Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu
Sukhu has been the former state president of the party and also the chief of its campaign committee. He contested from Nadaun seat in Central Himachal. Sukhu, a three-time MLA, has a good hold in the party cadre and is being considered as one of the strong contenders for the chief minister’s post. Officially, Sukhu said that the decision on the chief minister will be taken by the party high command.
Mukesh Agnihotri
Four-time MLA Mukesh Agnihotri is the leader of the opposition. He contested from Haroli seat of Himachal Pradesh. Before delimitation, his seat was known as Santokgarh. He was first elected from this seat in 2003. Agnihotri was elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) after the 2017 assembly elections.
Pratibha Singh
She is the wife of former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Virbhadra Singh and also the President of Himachal Congress. He contested for the first time in 2004 from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, in which he defeated Maheshwar Thakur. In the 2013 bypolls, he had defeated BJP leader Jairam Thakur from the same seat. She was elected MP after the death of BJP’s Ram Swaroop Sharma.

While the Congress won 40 seats, the BJP managed to win only 25 seats, despite securing 43 percent of the vote. In many seats, victory and defeat were decided by the difference of less votes. Three independent candidates also emerged victorious in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections held on November 12.
