New Delhi/United Nations. Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel posted in the Congo under the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission were killed during violent protests on Tuesday. A spokesman of the force and the United Nations gave this information. External Affairs Minister S. Expressing grief over the death of the soldiers, Jaishankar expressed condolences to the bereaved families. Both soldiers were part of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Congo.
A senior official said that both the BSF personnel hailing from Rajasthan were head constables. At least five people were killed and about 50 others injured on the second day of protests against the UN mission in the eastern city of Goma, according to international media. A force spokesman said, “On July 26, two BSF personnel, who were part of a UN peacekeeping force stationed in Butembo, Congo, succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent armed protest.”
Officials said that two platoons of 70 to 74 BSF personnel were stationed in the area. Jaishankar tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the death of two brave Indian peacekeepers of BSF in Congo. He was part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission. The perpetrators of these outrageous attacks must be held accountable and brought to justice.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, said in a daily press briefing on Tuesday that violence against the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo is “increasing.” Police personnel were killed and another was injured. We condemn the killing of our associates and express our deepest sympathies to their families and associates.
