Revision of voter list before elections in Bihar(elections)

Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Election  (elections)    Commission’s reluctance to accept Aadhaar and Voter Identity Card (EPIC) as valid documents in the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar. The court said that any document can be forged.

The court expressed concern

The bench headed by Justice Suryakant has expressed concern over the exclusionary approach of the Election Commission. Also, the bench of the court has stressed the need to include both the documents in the verification process.

The court put pressure on the Election Commission

Justice Suryakant said, ‘Any document on earth can be forged.’ He pressured the Election Commission to clarify why Aadhaar and EPIC are not being fully accepted, while Aadhaar is already being asked for in the registration form.

Know what argument did the Election Commission give in the court?

During the hearing held today, the Election Commission argued that Aadhaar is not a proof of citizenship. The court expressed concern about fake ration cards. It also said that due to large-scale forgery, it has become difficult to trust them. However, the Commission admitted that Aadhaar can be presented as proof of identity. Its number is already asked for in the registration form.

Where is the system to stop fake documents, the court raised the question

Raising questions on this, the Supreme Court said that if no document in the Election Commission’s own list is conclusive, then the same logic can be applied to Aadhaar and EPIC as well. The bench asked, ‘If tomorrow the other ten documents accepted by you are also found to be fake, then where is the system to stop it? Why are people being excluded on a large scale instead of including them on a large scale?’ The court also requested that if someone is excluded from the list, a time limit be set for the process.
