New Delhi. The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, on Wednesday recommended the appointment of Chief Justices of the High Courts of Bombay, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Odisha and Kerala. Chief Justice Justice Chandrachud, Justice Sanjay K. The three-member collegium (collegium ) comprising Justice Kaul and Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recommended Justice Sunita Agrawal as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
If approved by the Centre, once appointed, she will be the only woman Chief Justice of a High Court as there is currently no female representation in the post. In Wednesday’s meeting, the collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay, judge of the Allahabad High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
The collegium also recommended the appointment of Justice Alok Aradhe, a judge of the Karnataka High Court (original High Court: Madhya Pradesh), as the Chief Justice of the High Court for the state of Telangana. For the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, the Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, Judge of the Bombay High Court [original High Court: J&K and Ladakh].
Delhi High Court judge Justice Siddharth Mridul has been recommended by the collegium as Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. Along with this, the Supreme Court Collegium also recommended the appointment of Justice Subhasis Talapatra of Odisha High Court (original High Court: Tripura) as Chief Justice of Odisha High Court. Similarly, Justice Ashish J. Desai, a judge of the Gujarat High Court, has been recommended by the Collegium as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
The Collegium observed that these judges are fit and suitable in all respects to be appointed as Chief Justices of various High Courts and therefore, it recommends their appointment. Justice Sunita Agrawal was appointed as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on 21 November 2011 and is now the senior-most judge in her parent high court. She has been working there since her promotion and has over 11 years of experience in dispensing justice in the country’s largest High Court.
