Wayanad, Kerala: At least two people were killed and seven others injured after a massive landslide struck a tunnel construction site in Kerala’s Wayanad district on Tuesday. Rescue teams are continuing search operations as several workers are feared trapped under the debris.
The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge in the Kalladi area, where construction work was underway on a tunnel road project connecting the districts of Malappuram and Wayanad. Continuous heavy rainfall triggered the landslide, sending a large volume of mud and rocks crashing onto the construction site.
According to local authorities, two workers lost their lives in the incident, while seven injured persons were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said several workers remain unaccounted for, and rescue personnel are searching the debris.
Police, Fire and Rescue Services, and disaster response teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving information about the incident. Excavation and search operations are underway, although persistent rainfall is making rescue efforts challenging.
Authorities have cordoned off the affected area and urged the public to stay away from the site until rescue operations are completed. The exact cause of the landslide is under investigation, though continuous heavy rainfall is believed to have triggered the collapse.
Officials said the number of casualties or missing persons may change as the rescue operation progresses.
