Vilnius: Lithuania said on Wednesday it had closed its embassy in Beijing and recalled its last surviving diplomat from the Chinese capital. The move comes amid controversy over the EU country allowing Taiwan to open a representative office in its capital, Vilnius.
The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Baltic country would continue its diplomatic activities in China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and does not grant diplomatic recognition to countries that recognize the island as a separate nation. Let’s see in.
The ministry said it had recalled the ambassador in charge of Lithuania in Beijing – the deputy head of the embassy – for consultations.
“The technical aspects of conducting Lithuania’s diplomatic representation in China and China’s representation in Lithuania and pending the decision of China are being discussed to renew the recognition of Lithuanian diplomats in China,” the foreign ministry said.
The ministry said Lithuania is “ready to continue talks with China and fully restore the functions of the embassy once a mutually beneficial agreement is reached.”
