New Delhi: Delhi government will soon make PUC certificate mandatory for filling petrol and diesel at pumps. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that this policy will help us how to stop polluting vehicles from plying in Delhi and people can breathe clean air here. Vehicle owners in Delhi will have to carry their Pollution Under Control Certificate to the petrol pump. If the PUC is found to be invalid, it will have to be reissued at the same pump. Considering the poor air quality level of Delhi, this move will see non-polluting vehicles on the roads.
Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that North India including Delhi faces severe air pollution especially in winters. After the implementation of this policy, vehicles will have to compulsorily carry PUC certificate while filling petrol and diesel at the pumps. Thus, the pollution level of every vehicle in the state will be periodically checked.
Pollution Control Certificate is issued through registered PUC centers to control vehicular pollution. There are about 966 such centers in 10 zones in Delhi. They play a vital role in monitoring vehicular pollution and certifying the fitness of vehicles as per emission norms. Periodic checks are also done by the pollution level testing inspectors to ensure that the correct certificates are being issued by the PUC centres.
Delhi Government is also working on establishing technology based methods for effective implementation of this policy so that vehicle owners as well as petrol pump owners do not face any inconvenience in connection with the verification of PUC certificates and Don’t have long queues. These methods may also include technology such as RFID.
