Malkangiri: A total of 295 active Maoist militia members surrendered before Odisha Police in Swabhiman Anchal of Malkangiri district. These included unarmed villagers sympathizing with the Red rebels, informers and people who helped them in various ways. Director General of Police SK Bansal gave this information on Sunday.
This militia includes members of Gana Natya Sangh and village committees. These female and male members are residents of Dhakapadar, Dabuguda, Taber and Arlingpada villages of Jantri gram panchayat area under Jodambo police station.
The Director General of Police said that they voluntarily came to a Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Jantri and surrendered to Odisha Police in the presence of Malkangiri district administration on Saturday afternoon. Bansal said the militia members were not cadres of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) outfit but worked as their assistants.

He told that the surrendered militia members inform about the incidents of arson, hoisting black flags, burning vehicles, boycotting elections, arranging food and logistics for the Maoists, movement of security forces and threatening such innocent tribals. and were involved in acts such as attacking those who were called “police informers”.
The Director General said the villagers claimed they were misled by the Maoists, and were encouraged by the surrender of 50 militia members on June 2 this year. “Seeing the development work of the government in the region, the Maoists decided to join the mainstream and lead a peaceful life,” he said.

The surrendered militia members burnt the Maoists’ uniforms and raised slogans against them. He performed ‘Dhemsa’ (local folk dance) at the camp and took part in a banquet organized by the police and administration on the occasion.
The administration distributed MNREGA cards and pension cards to them. The police also provided sports equipment to the surrendered militia members. “We appeal to the Maoists to return to the mainstream and lead a peaceful life,” Bansal said.
