Britain. A “big refreeze” warning has been issued in the United Kingdom as the record for the second coldest night in a row this year has been set. Fog and snow disrupted travel plans for many Britons and visitors ahead of the holiday. The report said that drivers have been warned about “black ice” and advised to stay at home. Black ice is a thin, almost transparent, sheet of ice considered fatal on the roads.
AA president Edmund King was quoted as saying by the Independent that “Often, when there is snow around you, it melts a little, then it freezes overnight. Then the next morning you don’t see snow. It’s black ice or you can’t see it.”
Railways completely closed Railways in the UK are almost completely closed, with only around 20% of services expected to run. Meanwhile, the drivers were stuck on the road for hours due to snow and fog and traffic came to a standstill.
Britain’s oldest roadside recovery service company RAC experienced its biggest day ever for car breakdowns on Monday. “Yesterday was officially our busiest day for breakdowns on record, with almost 12,000 drivers needing help, which equates to every minute of the day,” Rod Dennis of RAC Breakdowns told The Guardian.
