Police in Bengal will keep an eye on BSF: Mamata

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday directed the state police to keep a watch on the activities of the Border Security Force. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s warning comes in the backdrop of the Nagaland firing incident in which 14 civilians lost their lives. He also directed the police not to allow BSF to act outside its jurisdiction.

Mamata Banerjee expressed concern over increasing the BSF’s jurisdiction from 15 km to 50 km and said that BSF officers often enter villages in border districts like Dinajpur, Malda and Murshidabad without informing the state police.

In an administrative review meeting of Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur districts in Karanjora, Banerjee further said, “I know there is a problem… BSF personnel come to our village and then we get complaints of being harassed.” They go to many places which are outside their jurisdiction without informing the police.

Talking about BSF, Mamata Banerjee said, ‘Everyone has seen what happened in Nagaland. During the assembly elections, three people were killed in firing in Sitalkuchi in Bengal and recently in Cooch Behar… I would ask the block development officers and inspector-in-charge to be alert.
