Women Desk:In a major development from Panihati, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ratna Debnath has taken a strong lead of over 56,000 votes as counting continues in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Her campaign, centered on justice and public accountability, has made this constituency one of the most talked-about seats in the state.
Ratna Debnath, who is the mother of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College incident, said the election is not just about politics but about seeking justice. She stated that her personal loss has turned into a collective voice, with people across the region supporting her cause.
The Panihati seat has long been considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has held it since 2011. However, the current election has witnessed a shift in voter sentiment, with Debnath’s candidacy changing the nature of the contest. Political observers believe her entry has moved the focus from traditional party rivalry to issues of governance, justice, and citizen rights.
Women’s safety has emerged as a key issue during the campaign. Debnath’s message that such incidents can happen to any family has resonated widely, turning a local tragedy into a broader public concern across West Bengal.
The election also saw a high voter turnout of over 91% in the second phase, reflecting strong public participation. Analysts suggest that this indicates rising awareness among voters and a growing demand for accountability and safety.
During polling, Debnath alleged misconduct by rival party workers. These claims remain part of the political debate and are yet to be independently verified.
With a significant lead and growing public support, Ratna Debnath’s campaign is being seen as a major moment in West Bengal politics, highlighting a shift toward issue-driven elections and citizen-focused narratives.
