Pravasi Diwas: The year 2022 is passing by leaving behind many problems and crises. The challenge of recovering from Kovid-19 is not over before the world. At the same time, this year has also seen the huge effects of Russia Ukraine war, climate change. Along with these, there are many other problems which are waiting to be solved or resolved. International Migrants Day on 18th December is the day to brainstorm on the migrant crisis which is also the result of most of these crises. This is an opportunity for us to understand the reality of migration in the world and stop seeing it from a narrow perspective as a burden.
Conflict, insecurity, disputes are the reason
In recent years, war, insecurity, the dire effects of climate change, and other crises have only served to exacerbate this problem within and beyond borders. Conflict, insecurity, disputes have forced people to leave their homes, but when they reach some other place due to any reason and compulsion, others see them as a burden.
who are migrants
By the end of the year 2021, 5.9 crore people had been displaced. But here it is important to know and understand who the migrants are. There is no official definition of the term migrant. It refers to those people who leave their traditional residence and move either within their own country or across an international border.
there are many reasons for this
Migration, sometimes called displacement, can be permanent as well as temporary, and there can be many reasons for it. War and climate change are the reasons that remain the main reason for migration nowadays, but apart from these, people leave their homes for many other reasons. Migrants also include a variety of people, such as migrant workers, people displaced by human trafficking, people who have migrated illegally, etc.
one in thirty
According to the International Organization for Migration, one out of every 30 people is a migrant. Most discussions on migration begin with numbers. How many people are going where, what kind of trend is there, how changes are taking place, all this information tells about the demographic changes of the world, which makes future planning easier.
Migrants are increasing
According to global estimates, there were 281 international migrants worldwide in 2020, which was 3.6 percent of the world’s population. The number of international migrants has been increasing in the last five decades. But mostly it has been seen that displaced or migrant people are isolated in the society. Or they are exploited. But they are not socially included at the local level.
migrant workers or laborers
Most of the reasons for migration are in search of better employment or work. Still, the treatment of migrant laborers is not fair. Their job or their work is temporary, they have to face a lot of insecurity and their working conditions are often not good. The economic crisis is deepening everywhere in the world, in such a situation where people are already struggling with economic problems and challenges, migration increases the sense of insecurity among the local people, due to which the migrants have to bear the brunt.
Whatever may be the reason, this is what is happening in the world at this time. A large number of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar going to Bangladesh is becoming a challenge or a problem for the Bangladeshis themselves. South European countries themselves are troubled by the people coming from Africa and are not able to give them shelter, even in India itself, the movement of people from Uttar Pradesh Bihar to Maharashtra remains a political issue. International Migration Day is celebrated with the aim of developing the attitude of people to see the situations in the right perspective in many such types of migration.
