Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov ( Lavrov ) said in the Russian lower house of parliament (State Duma) on Wednesday that no one other than US President Donald Trump has claimed that India will stop buying oil from Russia. Responding to a question from a lawmaker, he clarified, “You mentioned that Donald Trump announced India’s agreement not to buy Russian oil. I have not heard such a statement from anyone else, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi or other Indian leaders.”
Washington is pressuring
Lavrov further noted that Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar recently mentioned energy security as one of the key issues at the BRICS summit in New Delhi. Lavrov’s comments come days after Russia accused the US of pressuring India and other countries to stop buying Russian oil. Russia says Washington is taking such steps to exert pressure through tariffs, sanctions, and other direct and indirect means.
India-Russia Friendship is Strong
Lavrov emphasized the strength of Russia-India relations, saying that President Putin’s visit to India in December 2025 further enriched the special strategic partnership between the two countries. During this visit, several important joint documents were signed, elevating bilateral relations to new heights. Lavrov said that the next meeting between the leaders of the two countries is expected to take place during the BRICS summit.
Lavrov rejected US claims
Lavrov said Russia is ready to make every effort to further strengthen relations with India in accordance with New Delhi’s wishes. He stressed that these relations have no limits. Overall, Lavrov described Russia-India energy cooperation as strong, rejecting US claims, and underscoring the trust-based partnership between the two countries.
