Mumbai. At least 72 percent of Mumbai’s mosques have stopped using loudspeakers for morning azan. Police sources gave this information on Tuesday. This development has come at a time when Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has demanded removal of loudspeakers from the mosques of Maharashtra by May 3. It is worth noting that the first Azaan of the day is given at around five in the morning. A police official claimed that around 72 per cent of the mosques have stopped using loudspeakers for morning azan, while the rest of the mosques have reduced the loudspeaker’s sound level.
He said that the police had recently held a meeting with religious leaders in order to maintain law and order after the controversy regarding Azan over loudspeakers escalated. During the meeting, permission was given for the use of loudspeakers and to follow the directions of the Supreme Court, the official said. He said that strict action will be taken against those who violate the law. With this, the effect of Raj Thackeray’s threat has started showing. However, in many parts of the country, there has been a dispute over the loudspeakers in mosques for Namaz. There have also been complaints of not allowing Namaz to be offered at some places in UP.
PFI had also threatened
It is worth noting that a few days ago, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray had warned that if prayers are not started in mosques with loudspeakers, then we will also recite Hanuman Chalisa in temples. Some of his workers did the same. Here, while replying to Raj Thackeray, Popular Front of India said that if anyone tries to put his hands on the loudspeaker, then Popular Front of India will be seen in the forefront.
