A Mumbai court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to SP MLA Abu Azmi in a case of praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The court granted anticipatory bail in a case registered against Abu Azmi. After the petition filed after the statement made about Aurangzeb, Abu Azmi said in his application that his comment was not made to insult any particular person or to hurt religious sentiments. After his argument, Additional Sessions Judge VG Raghuvanshi granted his anticipatory (anticipatory ) bail plea.
He was suspended from Maharashtra Assembly
Abu Azmi has been suspended from Maharashtra Assembly till March 26 in connection with the praise of Aurangzeb. While granting relief to Azmi, the court imposed some conditions and directed him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 20,000. A case was registered against Azmi, MLA from Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar constituency, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for his remarks praising the Mughal emperor.
Abu Azmi had praised Aurangzeb
Azmi, the president of the Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra unit, had said that during Aurangzeb’s reign, India’s borders extended to Afghanistan and Burma (Myanmar). Referring to Aurangzeb’s reign, Azmi had claimed, “Our GDP was 24 percent of (world GDP) and India was called the golden bird.” When asked about the fight between Aurangzeb and Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Azmi had termed it a “political fight”. Solkar argued that the said comment was not made with the intention of hurting the religious sentiments of any person. The lawyer argued that the allegations did not show that Azmi had made the statements deliberately and with a malicious intent to hurt religious sentiments.
