New Delhi. Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Bill’, which has a provision to reserve 33 percent seats for women in the lower house of Parliament and state assemblies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was present in the Upper House when the bill was passed. In the Rajya Sabha, 215 votes were cast in favor of the Women’s Reservation Bill, while not a single vote was cast in opposition. A day before this, on Wednesday, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with a two-thirds majority.

Prime Minister Modi posted on Twitter, “A defining moment in our country’s democratic journey! Congratulations to 140 crore Indians. I thank all those Rajya Sabha MPs who voted for the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. “Such unanimous support is truly heartening.”
‘Now women’s voices will be heard more effectively’
He further said, “With the passage of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act in Parliament, we begin an era of stronger representation and empowerment for the women of India. This is not just a legislation, it is a tribute to the countless women who have built our country. India has been enriched by their resilience and contributions. Today we remember the strength, courage and indomitable spirit of all the women of our country. “This historic step is a commitment to ensure that their voices are heard even more effectively.”
After the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Bill’ becomes law, the number of women members in the 543-member Lok Sabha will increase from the current 82 to 181. 33 percent seats will be reserved for women in state assemblies also. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that currently the provision of reservation has been made in the bill for 15 years and the Parliament will have the right to extend it. The Union Minister had clarified that there will be reservation for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe in the reserved seats for women also.
