New Delhi. According to China’s numbers, the world’s largest navy is busy in making useless use of Freedom of Navigation. The presence of Chinese (China’s) warships has increased in the Indian Ocean region and indigenous warships of the Indian Navy are also getting ready to counter it. The Indian Navy is rapidly engaged in the construction of indigenous warships for its war fleet. In the same list, President Draupadi Murmu launched the sixth stealth frigate of Project 17A in Kolkata on August 17, so now the country’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will be present at the launch of the seventh warship.
According to the practice of the Navy, the launching of the ship is done by the hands of the woman only. That’s why this launch will be done by Vice-President’s wife Sudesh Dhankhar on September 1 at Mazgaon Dock in Mumbai. 75 percent of the equipment of the Y-12654 (Mahendragiri) project has been taken from indigenous companies. Its design has been prepared by Navy Warship Design Bureau and it has been prepared by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Ship Builder.
All the frigates of this project are named after the mountain ranges of India – Nilgiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, Udayagiri, Dunagiri and Vindhyagiri. The seventh and last frigate of Project 17A is Mahendragiri, named after the mountain range of the Eastern Ghats of Odisha, and these stealth guided missile frigates will also begin to be received and inducted into the Indian Navy from 2024 onwards going will start.
At present, when this ship is launched in water, equipment, weapons will be installed and then it will go on its sea trial. They will be inducted into the Navy only after the sea trials are completed.
Features of Stealth Guided Missile Frigate
If we look at the specialty of this frigate, then it is 75 percent indigenous. Its design is also indigenous and its steel is also indigenous. This frigate weighing 6600 tonnes can run at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour. Will be equipped with Air Defense Gun for Anti Air Warfare, BrahMos Anti Ship Missile for Anti Surface Warfare, Varunastra for Anti Submarine Warfare and Anti Submarine Rocket Launcher. 2 helicopters can also land easily in this frigate and hangars will also be available to keep them. This frigate will be equipped with radar, sonar and combat management system.
India’s strength will increase in the sea
Project 17A is the follow-on to the Project 17 class (Shivalik class) frigates. Under 17A, 7 Nilgiri class frigates have been built for the Navy, out of which 4 have been built by MDL and 3 by GRSE ship builders. 5 ships of this project have been launched by MDL and GRSE ship builders between 2019 and 2022 and one has already been launched this year and one is about to be launched. After the induction of these stealth guided missile frigates into the Navy, India’s strength in the blue sea will increase tremendously.
