Mumbai: Google CEO Sundar Pichai has been accused of copyright infringement. Bollywood filmmaker Sunil Darshan has filed a case against Google, its CEO, Sundar Pichai and five other Google employees in this regard. Darshan, the producer of films like “Intakam” and “Andaz”, says Google and its team violated the copyright of his 2017 directorial venture “Ek Hasina Thi Ek Deewana Tha”.
Sunil Darshan claims that he has neither uploaded nor sold the film, yet the film is available on many YouTube channels. He also says that when he approached Google in this regard, it refused to remove the film from the respective channels. The filmmaker has filed a case against the Google CEO and his team at MIDC Police Station in Andheri East for violating sections 51, 63 and 69 of the Copyright Act of 1957.
Darshan said that his entire film including the songs has been uploaded on YouTube and has also been monetized. Those people are earning money from my film, who have nothing to do with the film. The complainant says that Google had given permission to the unauthorized person to upload his film ‘Ek Hasina Thi Ek Deewana Tha’ on YouTube. Due to this move of Google, those people earned crores of rupees and they lost crores of rupees.
In this regard, a Google spokesperson in India said that the company relies on copyright owners to notify them about unauthorized uploads and provides them with rights management tools such as the YouTube Content ID system, which allows rights holders to upload their content. They provide an automated way to identify, block, promote and even earn money. He further added that when a copyright holder notifies us of a video that infringes their copyright, we immediately remove the content in accordance with the law, and terminate the accounts of users with multiple copyright strikes.
