Peshawar: Firing broke out between two rival groups over the occupation of forest land in the tribal area of northwestern Pakistan. Officials said on Sunday that about 10 people died in this incident, while 15 were injured.
The clash started on Saturday afternoon when members of the Gaidu tribe, residents of Teri Megal village in Khurram district, 251 km from the state capital Peshawar, opened fire on members of the Pewar clan, who were picking firewood in the village. Officials said that tension was going on between the two tribes for the last few months over the ownership of the forest in the upper subdivision of Khurram district.
A police officer said, ‘4 people died on Saturday while 6 others died on Sunday when the Pewar clan retaliated. The gunmen attacked by hiding in the ditch. Heavy weapons and even rocket launchers were used by both sides during this period.
Significantly, the Khurram district in northwestern Pakistan borders neighboring Afghanistan, where the use of guns in crime and terrorist attacks are frequent. At present, the elders of the tribes and government officials are trying to make a settlement between the Gaidu and Pewar clans. Police and paramilitary forces have been sent to the area. But police sources say that the death toll is likely to increase.
