New Delhi: India has now become more cautious in view of the threat coming from the neighboring country. This is the reason that the Agni series is being tested with more lethality and firepower. The country’s Agni-5 missile is capable of targeting the far northern region of China, which has a range of 5 thousand km.
India has successfully test-fired the Agni-5 surface-to-surface missile. The range of this missile is about 5 thousand km and it is capable of hitting the target with complete accuracy. The main objective of India’s Agni-5 project is to make China’s nuclear capability ineffective and to empower the Indian Army against Dragon. China already has Dongfeng-41 missile, which has a range of 12 to 15 thousand km.
The Agni-5 project was started about a decade ago and till now this missile has been tested 7 times. Agni-5 missile can hit the far northern part of China with its firepower. DRDO had successfully tested this missile in view of the ongoing tension with China on the LAC. The height of this missile is about 17 meters and it can carry 1.5 tons of war material.
China had tested two of its hypersonic missiles, after which India also carried out the successful test. Although Dragon called it a routine test. India first test-fired the Agni missile in 1989, followed by a missile test in Pakistan nearly a decade later. At present, DRDO is working on Agni-6 missile, which has a range of about 6 thousand km.
This missile is capable of carrying 10 nuclear warheads and can target 8 to 10 thousand km. Also it can be launched from submarine. The first test of Agni-5 was done in April 2012 and the last test was done about three years ago. China raised the curtain in the year 2019 with its medium range missile DF-17. This missile can target up to 2 thousand km and is capable of carrying weapons.
Agni series missiles have a range of 700 to 3500 km and all of them have been ready. But now the purpose of the Agni-5 project is to carry forward this capability. Along with this, counter-weapons have to be prepared against China. India was till now dependent on western countries for defense cooperation. Countries like America, Japan and Australia have major partners with quad countries. India has bought S-400 missile defense system from Russia. India has made this big military deal with Russia regardless of US sanctions.
Apart from India, Russia has also recently tested hypersonic missile Zircon. It was targeted from the submarine. Apart from this, North Korea also did a launch test of a new type of ballistic missile from submarine.
