New Delhi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’ (Rahul Gandh) s recent remarks on the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections have sparked a new controversy. His allegations have been completely rejected by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Let us tell you that Rahul Gandhi has alleged that the Maharashtra elections were part of a “plan to rig democracy” and that “match fixing” will also be done in Bihar and other states where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is losing. However, the ECI has rejected these allegations as “baseless” and “an insult to the rule of law”.
Election Commission responds
The Election Commission, reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s statement, called his claims “absurd” and “misleading”. In a statement, the Election Commission said that a detailed response to the Congress party’s concerns is publicly available on the Election Commission’s website from December 2024. The Election Commission emphasized that allegations without evidence not only disrespect the law but also demoralize election staff who work tirelessly to ensure fair elections. The Election Commission said, “Any misinformation spread by anyone is not only a sign of disrespect for the law but also defames thousands of representatives appointed by their political parties and also demoralizes lakhs of election staff.” What allegations did Rahul Gandhi make? Let us tell you that Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, accused the Election Commission of conducting fake elections to ensure the victory of the ruling party in Maharashtra. Rahul Gandhi’s allegations talked about several alleged irregularities including adding fake voters, increasing polling percentage, facilitating fake voting and hiding evidence. Rahul Gandhi said that such practices will also spread to other states like Bihar, where the BJP may face challenges in the upcoming elections. Questions asked to Election Commission
After the Election Commission responded, Rahul Gandhi posted another post on X. He wrote in his post, “Dear Election Commission, you are a constitutional institution. Issuing unsigned, evasive notes to meddlers is not the way to answer serious questions. If you have nothing to hide, answer the questions in my article and prove it:
Publish consolidated, digital, machine-readable voter lists for the most recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections of all states, including Maharashtra.
Release all CCTV footage from polling stations in Maharashtra after 5 pm.” Rahul Gandhi wrote on X, “Evasion will not protect your credibility. Speaking the truth will protect your credibility.”
