Sikkim: Heavy rains in North East have caused heavy damage in all the states. At least 500 tourists were stranded in various parts of North Sikkim ( Sikkim) on Saturday, while eight are missing due to continuous rain and landslides blocking the main road in Sikkim. At the same time, two girls died due to lightning in Meghalaya on Saturday due to heavy rains, while another died due to drowning. At the same time, nine people died in floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh.
Officials said that the search for eight missing tourists was hampered due to heavy rains in Sikkim and it was finally called off after the water level in the Teesta river increased. He said that one person died, two others were injured while eight went missing after a vehicle fell into the Teesta river in Mangan district on Thursday night. The vehicle fell into the river at a depth of more than 1,000 feet near Munsithang on the Lachen-Lachung highway.
Tourists stranded in Sikkim
An official said that landslides occurred at various places on the main road connecting Chungthang to Lachen and Lachung, due to which at least 500 tourists are stranded in different parts of North Sikkim. He said, “No tourist permit has been issued today and no permit will be issued to go to North Sikkim tomorrow either.” The official said that the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued a ‘red alert’. He said that due to heavy rains, the water level of the Teesta river has increased and heavy rains are expected in the area in the coming days. In Bhubaneswar, Odisha, officials said that some of the people in the tourist vehicle that fell into the Teesta river were from their state.
Two girls killed in lightning strike in Meghalaya
“Two girls were killed in lightning strike in West Garo Hills district and a person drowned in Ri-Bhoi district,” a senior Meghalaya official said. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Six people have died in rain-related incidents in the state in the last three days, officials said. “49 out of about 1,100 villages have been affected due to landslides, flash floods and power supply disruptions,” he said.

Five killed in Mizoram
Four people, including three Myanmar refugees, were killed and another injured when a house collapsed in a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Mizoram on Saturday. The death toll this monsoon has risen to five, officials said. He said that three people aged between 34 and 71 years of a Myanmar family were killed and another injured in a massive landslide in the early hours of Saturday at Waphai village near the Myanmar border in Champhai district of eastern Mizoram. Officials said that the family had been taking refuge in the village since 2021 after the military coup in the neighboring country, the injured person was taken to a nearby hospital in Farkawn.
Several incidents of landslides in Mizoram
In a separate incident on Saturday in Serchhip district, about 114 km from the state capital Aizawl, a 53-year-old man died after a house collapsed due to a landslide. Officials said the victim succumbed to his injuries at the Serchhip District Hospital. On Friday, a 37-year-old man was killed and another person was injured when a wall collapsed on a labor camp in Thuampui area of Aizawl. Mizoram has been receiving heavy rains since Friday, triggering landslides and rock falls at several places.
9 people killed in Arunachal
Nine people were killed in flash floods and landslides in several districts of Arunachal Pradesh due to heavy rains for the last few days. Police said seven members of two families were killed when a vehicle was swept off the road due to a landslide on the Bana-Seppa section of National Highway 13 in East Kameng district late Friday night. East Kameng Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamdam Sikom said the vehicle was on its way from Bana in Bichom district to Seppa when it was hit by a landslide triggered by heavy rains and fell into a deep gorge.
