Nagpur. More than 100 Maoists fired indiscriminately at C-60 commandos and Special Operations Team (SAT) personnel with their state-of-the-art weapons when the encounter started in Mardintola forest of Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on Saturday morning. Notorious Naxal Milind Teltumbde and 25 other Naxalites were killed when the encounter ended after about 10 hours, a police official said on Sunday. Gadchiroli Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankit Goel said in a press conference that the police had received intelligence about a camp of Naxalites in Mardintola forest of Gyarapatti area of Korchi tehsil two days before the encounter on Saturday.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Gadchiroli range and other senior police officers were also present. Goel said, “A team of 300 police personnel, including C-60 commandos and SAT, along with Additional SP Soumya Munde, launched an anti-Naxal operation. They started a search operation in Mardintola forest on Thursday night. At around 6 am on Saturday morning, more than 100 Naxalites started heavy fire with their sophisticated weapons on C-60 commandos and Special Operations Team (SAT) personnel.
He said that 26 Naxalites were killed and four security personnel were injured in the encounter. Goyal said that so far 16 bodies have been identified with the help of the surrendered Maoists. He said that several slain Maoists had a huge reward on their heads, including top Maoist leader Milind Teltumbde, who had a reward of Rs 50 lakh on his head. Goel said, “The killing of Milind Teltumbde will affect Naxalism very badly not only in Maharashtra but across India.” was a wanted accused.
