Mumbai: After the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai amid heavy rains, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday in all schools and colleges in the city on Thursday. In view of the heavy rains, the Mumbai Police ( Police ) has appealed to the people to stay indoors. Mumbai Police posted on X that the IMD has declared a red alert for Mumbai till 8.30 am tomorrow. All Mumbaikars are requested to stay indoors unless necessary. Please stay safe. Dial 100 or dial 112 for any emergency.
Local train service affected
Mumbai and its suburbs received heavy rains on Thursday, causing waterlogging on roads in some areas. Due to this, traffic was disrupted and local train service was affected. Officials said that Vihar and Modak Sagar lakes are overflowing due to continuous rain in the catchment areas. With this, four of the seven reservoirs providing drinking water to the metropolis are now overflowing, improving the overall water stock. The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rains in the city and suburbs from 8 am in the next 24 hours and heavy rains at some places.
July is the second rainiest month ever
There is still a week left, but Mumbai has recorded the second rainiest month ever in July. So far this month, Mumbai has received 1,505.5 mm of rain. Last year in July, the city recorded 1,771 mm of rain, which was the highest ever. Heavy to very heavy rains have occurred in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai in the last 24 hours. Most of the rain occurred at night.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai city and neighbouring Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts and forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rain at a few places during the day.
