Delhi: The Indian (India) Army is going to get new tanks soon. They are small in size and are adept at moving easily even in difficult areas. These light weight tanks have been named Zorawar. The special thing is that they have been made in India within two years and now they have been deployed on the border connected to China in Ladakh.
Defense Research and Development Institute, a leading weapon manufacturing company in India, has built this tank in collaboration with private company Larsen and Toubro and the trial of the light tank is in the final stage. DRDO chief Dr. Sameer V Kamath on Saturday inspected the Hazira plant of Larsen and Toubro in Gujarat and took stock of the work.
Initiative of self-reliant India
The Indian Army was dependent on foreign technology for weapons for a long time. However, under Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the initiative to manufacture weapons in the country gained momentum and now this tank has been built within a record two years. Its special feature is that it has been designed for high altitude areas like Ladakh. Learning lessons from the Russia and Ukraine conflict, DRDO and L&T have used USV for weapons moving in the tank.
59 tanks in the first consignment
The light tank Zoravar weighs 25 tonnes. This is the first time that a new tank has been designed and prepared for testing in such a short time. Initially, 59 tanks will be given to the army. After this, a total of 295 tanks will be made available to the army. These tanks will be handed over to the army in several consignments.
Expected to join the army in 18 months
The Indian Air Force’s C-17 class transport aircraft can carry two tanks at a time. This tank is light and can be driven at high speed in mountain valleys. The tests are expected to be completed and the tank inducted into the army in the next 12-18 months. Although the ammunition for the first trials is coming from Belgium, DRDO is ready to develop indigenous ammunition.
