Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa (Himanta Biswa) Sharma on Tuesday made a minor reshuffle in his cabinet and took charge of the Health and Family Welfare Department himself. The Health Department was earlier with Keshav Mahanta, who has been given the departments of former minister Parimal Shukla Vaidya. Shukla Vaidya has been elected to the Lok Sabha.
Shukla Vaidya used to handle the Health Department
According to a government notification, Keshav Mahanta, a member of the Assam Gana Parishad, an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was holding the Health and Family Welfare Department since 2021. Mahanta has been given the Transport, Excise and Fisheries departments, whose work was earlier handled by Shukla Vaidya. These departments are in addition to the Science, Technology and Climate Change and Information Technology departments already held by Mahanta.
Shukla Vaidya resigned from the post of minister
Shukla Vaidya has resigned from the post of minister of state after being elected from Silchar (reserved for Scheduled Caste) parliamentary seat, which has been accepted by the Governor. Apart from the Health and Family Welfare Department, the Chief Minister will continue to hold Home, Personnel, Public Works, Medical Education and Research, Native and Tribal Faith and Cultural Departments (except Directorate of Library and Museum and Directorate of Archaeology). He will also hold those departments which have not been allocated to any other minister.
When Sarbananda Sonowal was the Chief Minister of Assam, under the leadership of Sharma as Health Minister, many steps were taken to update and expand the health infrastructure including testing facilities, to remove the problems faced by patients and to help the migrant laborers stranded outside the state during the lockdown and to deal with the Kovid-19 crisis.
