New Delhi. After a long drought in winter, snowfall caused by western disturbance has given great relief to the hilly states. The snowfall that started on the peaks in Uttarakhand from Tuesday night continued on Wednesday also. The first snowfall of this season occurred in Manali, Dalhousie and Kufri of Himachal Pradesh. Due to snowfall, Atal Tunnel had to be closed for tourists. In Jammu and Kashmir, there was snowfall in the higher reaches and rain in the plains. In Haryana, Punjab and National Capital Region, there was wind in the morning and rain in the afternoon.
Rain warning in these states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rain ( rain ) and snowfall in the hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand in the coming days. The effect of western disturbance will also be seen in the plains like Haryana, Delhi NCR and Uttar Pradesh, where light rain may occur. IMD has predicted rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till February 4.
After light rainfall in early November, Uttarakhand experienced drought conditions throughout the winter. Due to the activity of fresh western disturbance, light snowfall started on the peaks late on Tuesday night, which continued on Wednesday. Snowfall occurred in Harshil Valley, Kharsali, Harkidun including Gangotri-Yamunotri. Along with Badrinath Dham, there was snowfall on the peaks of Hemkund Sahib, Gorso, Auli.
Heavy snowfall also occurred on the high peaks of Munsiyari in Pithoragarh. The first snowfall of the season occurred in Chakrata, Dehradun, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the tourists. On Thursday also, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert regarding heavy snowfall in areas at an altitude of more than three thousand meters in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh and Bageshwar.
Tourists enjoyed snowfall
Atal Tunnel closed due to snowfall, people have felt relief from rain and snowfall in Himachal after almost two and a half months. Atal Tunnel in Rohtang received two feet of snowfall, due to which it had to be closed for tourists. Daypur in Lahaul-Spiti district received 1.25 feet snowfall, Tindi received one foot snowfall and Pangi received half a foot snowfall. Manali, Dalhousie, Kufri and Narkanda received snowfall for the first time this winter. Tourists continued enjoying the snow in Manali. Trikuta mountain also received snowfall. Snowfall occurred in many high altitude areas of Kashmir, while it rained in the plains.
Kokernag in Anantnag district, Handwara in Kupwara and Gurez in Bandipora also received snowfall. There has also been snowfall in Zoji La on the Srinagar-Leh highway. Snowfall occurred in Natthatap of Udhampur district in Jammu division. Kishtwar-Anantnag road is closed for the last 15 days. Rain and snowfall continued in Rajouri and Poonch. The mountains of Kathua also turned white with snow. Two to three inches of snow has fallen on the upper peaks of Trikuta mountain of Mata Vaishno Devi Bhavan in Katra. There has also been rain, due to which the helicopter service running between Katra and Sanjichhat was affected. Snow has further accumulated on Mughal Road, due to which it has been closed for six days.
More than 50 flights and many trains delayed due to fog
Traffic services were affected due to fog. At the IGI airport in Delhi, 51 flights were delayed and 11 others were cancelled. Trains continue to run late due to fog. Many important trains reached Delhi late by hours.
