New Delhi. The Defense Ministry on Friday approved nine proposals for procurement of various weapon systems and other equipment at a cost of about Rs 45,000 crore, including Dhruva short-range air-to-surface missiles and 12 Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft and Dornier aircraft. Including updating the planes. The approval for purchase proposals ( proposals) under the framework of the ‘Make in India’ initiative has come amid the ongoing standoff on the border with China in eastern Ladakh.
It is considered important to pursue the Indian Air Force’s proposal for avionics upgrade to improve the accuracy and reliability of the Dornier aircraft after technical glitches in the aircraft were reported on several occasions earlier this year. “The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has granted approval as required (AoN) for nine capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 45,000 crore,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
Procurement will be done from Indian vendors
AON refers to the preliminary approval of any defense acquisition project. Officials said that the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh approved a total of nine procurement proposals. The Defense Ministry said, “All these purchases will be made from Indian vendors, which will provide a substantial boost to the Indian defense industry towards achieving the goal of ‘Self-reliant India’.”
Now is the time for indigenization: Rajnath Singh
In the DAC meeting, Rajnath Singh said that now the time has come to upgrade the ambitions towards indigenization. “Instead of the 50 per cent indigenous content limit for Indian-indigenously designed, developed and manufactured (IDDM) projects, we should aim for a minimum of 60-65 per cent indigenous content,” he said.
Approval for purchase of armored vehicles
To enhance the protection, mobility, strike capability and survivability of the mechanized forces, the DAC has approved the procurement of Light Armored Multipurpose Vehicles (LAMVs) and Integrated Surveillance and Targeting Systems (ISAT-S), the ministry said in a statement. DAC has also approved the purchase of High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) for rapid transportation and deployment of guns and radars from one place to another.
Approval for purchase of next generation survey vessel
The ministry said the DAC also approved the procurement of next generation survey vessels for the Indian Navy. It said that a proposal of the Indian Air Force to ensure avionics upgradation of Dornier aircraft was also given Approval as Required (AON).
Dhruvastra air-to-surface missile
The ministry said the DAC has also approved the procurement of Dhruvastra as a powerful indigenous precision guided weapon for indigenously manufactured ALH Mk-4 helicopters. Dhruvastra is a short range air-to-surface missile.
