No change in assembly and Lok Sabha s(lok-sabha-)eats

New Delhi. The Election Commission has issued the delimitation order for Assam on Friday. Accordingly, there has been no change in the number of assembly and Lok Sabha seats in Assam. As before, 126 assembly and 14 Lok Sabha  (lok-sabha-) seats will remain intact in the state. Along with this, after delimitation, 19 assembly seats and 2 Lok Sabha seats have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes, while 9 assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat are reserved for Scheduled Castes.

Publishing its final report on the delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam, the commission has changed the names of one parliamentary and 19 assembly constituencies. It said that more than 1,200 representations were considered before finalizing the report. Out of the suggestions and objections received by the Commission, 45 per cent were resolved in the final order.

The delimitation of all assembly and parliamentary constituencies in the state was done on the basis of the 2001 census. It said, “Only the figures of the 2001 census published by the Census Commissioner have been considered for this purpose.” The Election Commission said that in view of public demand, a parliamentary and some assembly constituencies have been given “combined names”. , such as Darrang-Udalgiri, Hajo-Sualkuchi, Boko-Chaygaon, Nagaon-Batadraba, Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Algapur-Katlichera.

Mentioning some of the salient features of the final report, the Election Commission (EC) said that the lowest administrative unit has been taken as ‘village’ in rural areas and ‘ward’ in urban areas. According to this, the village and the ward have been kept as it is and it has not been broken anywhere in the state. After delimitation, SC assembly seats have increased from eight to nine, and ST assembly seats have increased from 16 to 19. The number of assembly constituencies in Bodoland districts has also increased from 11 to 15.

The Election Commission heard the views of representatives of political parties, civil organizations and the general public on the draft delimitation proposal during public meetings held in Guwahati in July. It was organized to give an opportunity to the people, public representatives, political leaders and other stakeholders to express their views.
