The main reason for this problem lies in the geographical location and natural terrain of the state. 50 tributaries of the state give water to the Brahmaputra river, the main river of Assam, due to which it takes a very dangerous form.

The area around Assam is also helpful for floods here. This river flows downstream through the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Both these states receive heavy rainfall in the monsoon because the mountains here and rain clouds come from the Bay of Bengal. Assam is not in a position to withstand such extreme weather events and result in floods. On the other hand, due to Bhutan in West Assam, water here creates flood situation.
The low-lying area here is a very favorable area for agriculture, due to which the rural area is spread here, due to which the rural economy is affected the most due to floods. The measures taken here include making most of the temporary dams so that the flood does not spread to more areas, but these have not proved to be very effective. The need here is to make an integrated or comprehensive policy involving a comprehensive and entire area and to make effective durable embankments for the banks.
