Sambhal: The administration and police in Sambhal ( Sambhal) district of Uttar Pradesh refused to allow the organization of the annual ‘Neja Mela’ in memory of Mahmud Ghaznavi’s nephew and military commander Syed Salar Masood Ghazi. An official said on Monday that the Sambhal police made it clear to the ‘Neja Mela’ committee that permission will not be given for the event organized in memory of a person who ‘looted the country’. The police called the organization of the fair treason.
Members of the ‘Neja Mela’ committee met Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shrish Chandra at the Kotwali on Monday, where the officer clearly refused to allow the organization of the fair in the name of Salar Masood Ghazi. He clarified to the committee members that history is witness that he (Masood Ghazi) was Mahmud Ghaznavi’s commander, who looted Somnath and massacred people.
No event will be organized in memory of a looter
The officer said that no fair of any kind will be organized in memory of any looter. Shahid Hussain Masuri, president of Nagar ‘Neja Mela’ Committee, told reporters that a fair has been organized here for hundreds of years, but this year police officials refused to give permission saying that Salar Masood Ghazi was an invader and a fair will not be organized in his memory. Shahid Hussain said that we will meet senior officials and talk to them. Additional Superintendent of Police Shrish Chandra said, “We did not give permission to organize the fair because Masood Ghazi was a looter and murderer, so how can a fair be organized in his memory.”
When was the fair going to be held?
The fair committee had planned to hoist the flag of the fair on March 18 and organize the fair on March 25, 26, 27, but the administration has not given permission for this. The history of Neja Mela in Sambhal is thousands of years old. Sambhal used to be the capital of Prithviraj. Many companions of Ghazi were killed during the battle here, whose tomb is in Sambhal. For this reason, the fair was being organized here for a long time, but now the police has made it clear that fairs cannot be organized in the name of looters.
