New Delhi. In the ICC ODI World Cup, Afghanistan had given a big upset by defeating the current champion England team. The Netherlands team, which is considered a giant killer, also showed its mettle in this tournament. The team that defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2022 showed an amazing performance in the World Cup being played in India. Batting first, Netherlands scored 245 runs (100 runs) for 8 wickets thanks to 78 runs from captain Scott Edwards. Due to rain the match was reduced to 43-43 overs. South African team was all out for 207 runs in 42.5 overs.
This is the second upset seen in the ICC ODI World Cup in three days. While Afghanistan defeated England by 69 runs, Netherlands defeated South Africa who were in stormy form. David Miller tried to give trouble to the Proteas team by staying at one end but he too was clean bowled on 43 runs.
Lost 6 wickets cheaply
The South African team has played brilliantly in this World Cup but their batting failed against the Netherlands. The team, which had scored above 300 in the last 5 ODIs, lost 6 wickets for just 109 runs while chasing 246 runs against Netherlands. The top 5 batsmen of the team had returned at just 89 runs before 100 runs. For Netherlands, Logan Van Beek took 3 wickets for 60 runs in 8.5 overs. Paul van Meekeren and van der Merwe took two wickets each.
Captain Edward’s explosive innings
Captain Scott Edwards played a brilliant innings for Netherlands against South Africa. Thanks to this innings, the team made a tremendous comeback in the match. For the team which had lost 7 wickets for 140 runs, Edward’s half-century took the score beyond 200 runs. The captain made 64 runs with Van der Merwe for the 8th wicket and an unbroken partnership of 41 runs with A Dutt for the 9th wicket, taking the score to 245 runs.
