The Indian Premier League (IPL) has changed the face of Indian cricket. This cricket league of India is one (ones. )of the most expensive, popular and glamorous leagues in the world in which players are desperate to play. The most expensive player in IPL history so far has been Sam Curran, who was bought by Punjab Kings for Rs 18.50 crore for the 2023 season.
England all-rounder Sam Curran was bought by Punjab Kings for a hefty sum of Rs 18.5 crore in IPL 2023. Although his performance was average. 25-year-old Sam had scored 276 runs in 14 matches this season at an average of 27.60 (strike rate 135.96). The bowling was also a flop and he could take only 10 wickets at an expensive average of 48.90. However, Sam has been retained with the expectation of good performance in IPL 2024.
Australia’s Cameron Green was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 17.5 crore in the 2023 auction. However, he is no longer a part of MI in the 2024 season. RCB has now traded Green to Mumbai for the same amount. In IPL 2023, Green scored 452 runs in 16 matches at an average of 50.22 (strike rate 160.28). But he was not successful in bowling and was able to take only 6 wickets at an average of 60.17.
All-rounder Ben Stokes was bought by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 16.25 crore in the 2023 season. This was not a good deal for CSK. Stokes struggled with injury the whole time. This player played only two matches and scored 15 runs and despite giving 18 runs in one match, could not take any wicket. CSK has now released this England cricketer. He will not be seen in IPL 2024 due to knee surgery.
Everyone was surprised when Rajasthan Royals bought South African all-rounder Chris Morris for Rs 16.25 crore in IPL 2021. Most people believed that this all-rounder did not deserve this much amount. Morris remained unbeaten twice in 11 matches and could score only 67 runs. He definitely took 15 wickets in bowling but the economy was very high (9.17). Morris has not played in IPL since 2021.
KL Rahul’s team Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) had priced West Indies wicketkeeper batsman Nicholas Pooran at Rs 16 crore in 2023. Puran did full justice to this price, he scored 358 runs in 15 matches at an average of 29.83 and strike rate of 172.95. He was also successful in the role of wicketkeeper.
Left-handed explosive batsman and spinner Yuvraj Singh was bought by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the 2015 season for a sum of Rs 16 crore. The 2015 season was bad for Yuvi, who had an overall good record in the IPL and he missed 14 matches. Could score only 248 runs. His strike rate was 118 and he was able to take only one wicket.
In the IPL 2020 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders i.e. KKR had bought Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins for Rs 15.5 crore. In this season, Cummins scored 146 runs in 11 innings of 14 matches and took 12 wickets.
Wicketkeeper batsman Ishan Kishan was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore for IPL 2022. In this season, Ishaan scored 418 runs at an average of 32.15 and strike rate of 120.11. His game improved even more in the 2023 season. Ishan Kishan is also a part of MI in the 2024 season.
New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 15 crore in the IPL 2021 auction. This deal proved costly for Bangalore. The tall Jamieson remained unbeaten thrice in 9 matches this season, scoring only 65 runs and taking 9 wickets.
In the IPL 2021 auction, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell was bought by RCB for Rs 14.25 crore. In this season, Maxwell had scored 513 runs and taken three wickets. This was a deal with which RCB was happy and Maxwell is still a part of Virat Kohli’s team.
Fast bowler Deepak Chahar, who is adept at swinging the ball, was bought by CSK for Rs 14 crore in the IPL 2022 auction. However, he could not play this season due to injury. Chahar is also a part of CSK in IPL 2024.
Kevin Pietersen was bought by RCB in the 2009 season for a sum of Rs 9.8 crore. In six matches this season, he scored 93 runs and took four wickets. It can be said that Pietersen had flopped badly.
Australia’s Andrew Flintoff was also bought by CSK in the IPL 2009 season auction for a sum of Rs 9.8 crore. Apart from scoring 62 runs, he took two wickets in three matches of the season. He was not a part of the team in many matches.
Australia’s Shane Watson was bought by RCB for Rs 9.5 crore for the IPL 2016 season. In 16 matches this season, Watson was successful in taking 20 wickets at an average of around 24. In batting, Watson scored 179 runs at an average of 13.76.
Mayank Agarwal was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad team in IPL 2023 for Rs 8.25 crore. Before this he was the captain of Punjab Kings. In this season, he scored 270 runs in 10 matches at an average of 27. It can be said that this deal did not prove beneficial for Hyderabad at least in 2023.
