Mumbai. Three years after the episode of joining hands with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar overnight to form the government in Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has made a sensational claim about it. Fadnavis said on Monday that the exercise had the support of NCP chief Sharad Pawar. He said, “We had a proposal from the NCP that they needed a stable government and we should form such a government together. We decided to go ahead and hold talks. Had a conversation with Sharad Pawar. Then things changed. You saw how things changed.
Fadnavis said, “With all fairness I want to say that Ajit Pawar took oath with me honestly…but later his (NCP) strategy changed.” Reacting to Fadnavis’ remarks, Sharad Pawar said, I felt that Devendra is a cultured and gentleman. I never felt that he would resort to lies and make such a statement.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 105 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on October 24, 2019. The Shiv Sena, which was in alliance with the BJP, had won 56 seats. Despite the alliance having enough seats to form the government, a dispute broke out between the two allies over who would get the chief minister’s post, as a result of which the Shiv Sena began talks with the Congress and the NCP to form a government.
President’s rule was imposed in Maharashtra and later Uddhav Thackeray’s government was formed
When there was no result, the Center imposed President’s rule in Maharashtra on 12 November. Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP continued talks to form an alliance and Sharad Pawar later announced that Uddhav Thackeray had been unanimously chosen to lead the new government. Thus, the swearing-in ceremony of Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar on the morning of 23 November came as a surprise.
