Delhi: The BCCI recently announced the Indian team for the ODI series against New Zealand. Shubman Gill will be seen captaining the team in the 3-match ODI series. Shreyas Iyer was appointed the vice-captain for this series. Meanwhile, big news ( Big News!) has emerged regarding Iyer.
In fact, Shreyas Iyer has been given a big responsibility before the ODI series against New Zealand. Iyer has suddenly been made the captain of the team. Iyer has been handed the captaincy of Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Earlier, Shardul Thakur was captaining Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Now, Iyer will take over the team’s command in his place. Shardul Thakur has been ruled out of this prestigious domestic 50-over tournament due to injury. Therefore, this big responsibility has been given to Iyer.
Will Mumbai play the remaining league stage matches under Iyer’s captaincy?
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) issued a statement on January 5 giving this information. In an official statement, the MCA said that it is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the Mumbai team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. After Shardul Thakur’s withdrawal, the team management has shown faith in the experienced middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer. Iyer has good experience of captaincy at the domestic and international levels, which is expected to strengthen Mumbai in the crucial matches of the tournament.
Waiting for the green light from BCCI
Whether Iyer continues as captain after the VHT league stage will depend on whether the BCCI declares him fit for international duty. Iyer has been included in the team for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which starts in Baroda on January 11.
Recently, while announcing the ODI team, the BCCI had said that Iyer’s fitness would be assessed at the Centre of Excellence and if he is declared fit, he will be included in the ODI team. If Iyer gets the green light to return to international cricket, the cricket association will have to appoint a different captain for the VHT knockout matches, which begin on January 12. MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said that they will take a decision once the situation becomes clear. Shreyas will captain the team in the remaining two league matches.
