Central Government Employees to Get 3% DA Hike, Cabinet Raises Allowance to 63%
The Union Cabinet has approved an additional Dearness Allowance instalment for employees and Dearness Relief for pensioners, effective from July 1, 2026.
The Union Cabinet approved a 3-percentage-point increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners on October 28, 2026. The increase raises both allowances from 60% to 63% of basic pay or pension, respectively.
According to an official release from the Press Information Bureau, the revised rates will apply retrospectively from July 1, 2026. The increase is intended to help employees and pensioners manage the effects of rising prices.
DA Hike Raises Allowance to 63%
Dearness Allowance is a component of the compensation paid to eligible government employees to help offset changes in the cost of living. Dearness Relief serves a similar purpose for eligible pensioners.
The latest increase follows the formula based on the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission. Since the revised rate takes effect from July 1, eligible beneficiaries may receive arrears for the period between that date and the implementation of the revised payments.
The exact additional amount will vary according to an employee’s basic pay or a pensioner’s eligible basic pension.
Millions of Employees and Pensioners to Benefit
The government’s official announcement estimates that approximately 48.54 lakh central government employees and 68.71 lakh pensioners will benefit from the revised rates.
The combined annual impact on the government exchequer is estimated at ₹10,016.10 crore, according to the Cabinet announcement.
The increase may provide some additional support to household budgets, particularly for beneficiaries managing regular expenses such as food, housing, healthcare and transport. However, the actual benefit will differ depending on individual pay and pension levels.
When Will Revised Payments Arrive?
The revised allowance is effective from July 1, 2026, but the timing of revised monthly payments and arrears depends on the relevant payment and administrative procedures.
Employees should check official departmental communications and salary slips for details. Pensioners should monitor their pension disbursement channels and official notices for confirmation of the revised amounts.
Why the Decision Matters
DA revisions are an important part of compensation policy for government employees and pensioners. They are intended to respond to inflation-related pressures rather than provide the same fixed amount to every beneficiary.
Conclusion: The Cabinet’s approval raises DA and DR from 60% to 63%, effective July 1, 2026. Eligible employees and pensioners should look for official payment instructions to confirm the timing and amount of their revised benefits.
