Flood in Assam: Like every year, the state of Assam in North East India has come under the grip of floods this year too. Officials said that some parts of Assam are battling the first phase of floods in the state this year. So far 34,189 ( 34,000 ) people have been affected by this flood. Monsoon knocked in Assam on 10th June. The Meteorological Department has recorded an average rainfall of 41 mm in 24 hours till Friday morning.
The IMD has predicted moderate rainfall over the next five days, with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places. The worst-affected district so far is Lakhimpur in upper Assam, where water entered villages after an embankment in Chamua village of Singra river and a riverbank dam in Philbari township breached on Wednesday.
According to the Indian Express, 22 villages, 23,516 people and 21.87 hectares of crops have been affected in Lakhimpur. Although this year’s floods are still in their initial stages, the government has so far set up only one relief camp in Udalguri district. While 10 relief distribution centers have been set up in Lakhimpur
Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Sumit Sattavan said ‘Relief measures have been taken by providing rice, pulses, oil, baby food etc as well as other important items like sanitary napkins, animal feed etc. Apart from this, halogen tablets and water pouches have also been distributed.
He further informed that ‘Medical teams have also been deployed in the flood-affected areas by the Public Health Engineering Department and the Health Department.’ Though no river in the state is flowing above the danger mark, the Central Water Commission has warned Puthimari and Brahmaputra to face severe flood situation with Kamrup and Jorhat flowing above the warning level.
The Central Water Commission has warned that heavy rain has been predicted in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska, Dalguri, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Nalbari, Darrang, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur, Brahmaputra and its tributaries and Barak river in the next two days. ,
